Hazard detection

At certain times during the test the Testing Officer will ask you to point out any hazards that you see in various traffic situations plus your response to the hazard - usually slowing down, stopping or changing position. Hazards include such things as cars, buses, cyclists and pedestrians. It can also include things like bends in the road etc.

Below are a few examples:

  • There is a cyclist up ahead so I am slowing down and/or moving out to give him room.
  • There is a pedestrian on the pavement so I need to be aware in case they step out.
  • There is a car close behind so I am easing off the gas so I won't have to brake so hard.
  • There is a car waiting at the side road and may pull out so I am covering the brake.
  • There is an oncoming car so I am moving a little to the left.

If you detect most of the hazards and respond correctly then you should pass the test.
