Full licence test

The full licence test takes about 35 minutes. It involves about 20 minutes driving and allows time for the vehicle checks and a debrief at the end. The test isn't too difficult as long as you drive the way the driving instructor taught you and you don't display any bad habits.

The test is split into two parts:

  1. General driving
  2. Hazard detection

General driving

You will be assessed in a variety of traffic situations. Some of these are the same as in the restricted licence test.

These may include:

For each traffic situation you will be assessed against a number of different items.

These include:

  • Observation -  Mirror use, head checks, Scanning the road, 12 second search
  • Signal use - Giving correct signals, timing of signals etc
  • Positioning - Correct positioning on the road for the traffic situation
  • Speed control - Driving at the correct speed for the traffic situation, speed limits
  • Following distance - Keeping a safe distance (2 or 4 second rule)
  • Gap selection - Choosing a safe gap at intersections

The Testing Officer will be watching to make sure you can apply the Give way rules. He will also watch out for any bad habits that you may have developed such as steering incorrectly or gear issues (manual) such as coasting etc.
